AUGUSTA (AP) – A 15-year-old Augusta girl died from injuries sustained in a fall on a school field trip, officials said. Emily Walker, who died Friday, was injured when she fell 20 feet down an embankment at the Vaughan Woods in Hallowell, officials said.

“This is easily the worst thing I’ve had to face as a superintendent,” Augusta Superintendent Cornelia Brown said.

Rescue crews responded Thursday afternoon after Walker fell backward and tumbled down the embankment. The student at Hodgkins Middle School in Augusta suffered a severe head injury and was airlifted to a hospital.

Nineteen Hodgkins Middle School students were on the field trip, accompanied by nine staff members, Brown said.

Grief counselors will be on hand when classes resume after the holiday weekend, she said.
