CALAIS – Nelson Vern Stewart, 89, passed away May 28, at Calais Regional Hospital, after a short illness.
He was born in Lewiston on Aug. 30, 1917, son of the late James and Blanche (Ray) Stewart. He was a graduate of Lewiston High School, Class of 1938.
He worked for Armour & Co. for more than 35 years. He lived in Greene on his farm, where he enjoyed taking care of his animals, apple orchard and garden. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a member of Ashlar Lodge 105 AF & AM, Mount Olivet Chapter 26 O.E.S., both in Auburn and Kora Temple Shrine in Lewiston.
Surviving are his son, Nelson J. “Sonny” Stewart, and his wife, Rita L. Brown; grandchildren, Tammy Allen, and husband, Richard, Todd Stewart, and wife, Bonnie Lane and Tracey Flewelling, and husband, Kenneth; great-grandchildren, Melissa, Ashley and Chad Allen, Chris, Daniel and Josha Stewart of Robbinston and Darin, Jenna and Jacob Flewelling of Levant; a brother, James R. Stewart, and wife, Wilma Hill Stewart; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marie P. Whitney Stewart.
The last five years he was at Atlantic Rehab and Nursing Center in Calais, where he was surrounded by love and quality care from all.
