AUBURN – Patricia F. Smith, 82, of Turner, formerly of South Paris, died Monday, May 28, at the Hospice House.
She was born in Lewiston on July 25, 1924, the daughter of Mildred M. Maxim. She graduated from Paris High School. In her younger years, she worked at Barjo’s Restaurant before joining the Army as a medic.
She opened the first PX after World War II in Frankfurt, Germany. She later worked at Johns Hopkins University for the group that made the Polaris missile and then for the National Security Association, eventually retiring in 1976.
She bought the Corner Store in South Paris in 1975, and retired in 1979 after selling the store. She enjoyed traveling, baking and painting. She married James D. Smith on Dec. 3, 1946. He passed away on June 3, 2000.
She is survived by two sons, Joel P. Smith, and his wife, Judith L., of Temperanceville, Va., and Richard D. Smith, and his wife, Patricia M., of Greene; a daughter, Cheryl D. Fournier, and her significant other, Kurt Durgin, of Turner; a special friend, Sandra Durgin; six grandchildren, Joel M. Smith, Katrina Leighton, Scott Maddix, Michael D. Smith, Morgan C. Smith and Natasha M. Smith; and an adopted daughter, Mary Jane King of South Paris.
