WEST PARIS – After opening and reviewing five construction bids Thursday for the planned Tuelltown Road rebuild, selectmen called a special meeting for 6 p.m. Thursday, June 7, to decide how to proceed with the project.

All five bids exceeded the $150,000 budgeted for the rebuild at the March town meeting.

“All the bids are well over our set budget so we need to further review the bids. Also, we need to review insurance held by each of the bidders and see if they followed the specifications we set for the project,” selectmen Chairman Bill Birney said.

“The scope of the project may have to be shortened to bring the costs back to what the town can afford,” he added.

Bids included $221,798 submitted by Beddard Excavating of Paris, $279,440 from Wilson Excavating of Waterford, $287,777 from C.H. Stevenson Construction of Wayne, $294,860 from Pratt & Sons of Mechanic Falls, and $533,000 from Longchamp’s and Son of Lisbon.

Plans include reclaiming the road surface, ditching, laying down new gravel, and grading and paving. It includes paving sections that have only a gravel surface.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. in the town office meeting room on Kingsbury Street.
