RANGELEY – The Trails for Rangeley Area Coalition, a local hiking and trails maintenance group, will celebrate National Trails Day on Saturday, June 2, as they have for years by doing a bit of trail clearing work.

This year the TRAC will work on the Aziscohos Mountain Trail. The public is invited to join in. The group will meet at the information kiosk on Route 16 in Oquossoc at 9 a.m., where carpools will form for the drive to the trailhead 15.6 miles west on Route 16.

Helpers are encouraged to bring chain saws, crosscut hand saws, loppers, gloves or just themselves. Those planning on participating should also consider insect repellent, organizers said.

Those unable to make it on Saturday but still interested in TRAC could consider joining the group the first Tuesday of the month, May through October, at 6:30 p.m. at the Guides and Sportsmen’s clubhouse on Old Skiway Road in Oquossoc. Monthly meetings feature guest presentations on the outdoors and planning sessions for outdoor excursions for everything from hiking to kayaking.

National Trails Day is sponsored by the American Hiking Society. It is held the first day of June each year. It is America’s largest celebration of trails and the outdoors, according to a release issued by TRAC. TRAC is a member of the American Hiking Society’s Alliance of Hiking Organizations.
