NORWAY – The annual Norway Farmer’s Market was serenaded into the 2007 season recently by a banjo band with no name.
“We have an awfully good time,” said Alan Hamilton of Greenwood, a banjo player with the group that was formed from local musicians who just wanted to play their instruments.
They haven’t decided on a name yet, so they call themselves “The Yet To Be Named Banjo Club.”
In addition to the Norway Farmer’s Market, the group plays each week at the farmers’ market in Longley’s parking lot in downtown Norway and other farmers’ markets such as in Bethel on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, and Harrison on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
It also travels to places as far away as Casco, Naples and Berlin, N.H.
Anyone who is interested in joining the group, which includes such disparate instruments as a tambourine, kazoo and two spoons and a tuba, is welcome to join the band at rehearsals Wednesday nights at the Fareshare Market on Main Street in Norway. The group welcomes beginners to advanced musicians into its rank.
The band plays banjo favorites with a flair for nostalgia and upbeat sing-along songs. For more information or to book the band, call Edie Brainard at 207-875-3901.
“We have awfully appreciative audiences,” Hamilton said.
