NEWRY – Maine Handicapped Skiing, Maine’s largest year-round adaptive recreation program for adults and children with physical disabilities, is offering a full season of summer adaptive activities starting in mid-June, including lessons in kayaking, canoeing, golf and cycling at various locations throughout Maine, all free.
Activities will include cycling at Back Bay on Marginal Way, Portland; canoeing and kayaking at Range Ponds State Park, Poland; river trips on the Androscoggin and golf at Toddy Brook Golf Course, Yarmouth; and golf at Bethel Inn Golf Course.
Maine Handicapped Skiing is a volunteer-based organization, 350+ strong, that provides free adaptive sports activities to children and adults with physical disabilities so they can challenge themselves by learning new skills, building their physical strength and having fun.
All sports taught at Maine Handicapped Skiing are adapted to the needs of participants. At canoe and kayak lessons, participants learn proper entry and exit of boats, paddling strokes and boat safety. The skills learned can later be put to the test on several half-day river trips on the Androscoggin River.
Participants interested in cycling will try out different cycles, learning skills and safety techniques. Basic adaptive lessons in driving, putting and on-course golf will be offered also.
Those who would like to participate or volunteer for the summer adaptive sports activities should call 800-639-7770, write MHS at 8 Sundance Lane, Newry, ME 04261 or e-mail MHS at [email protected].
