LIVERMORE FALLS – Two people suffered injuries and subsequently face charges following a domestic incident that turned violent, police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said.
The man had severe lacerations to the face and the woman complained of an ankle injury, officer Maurice Drouin said.
Police responded to the Pine Ridge Trailer Park shortly after midnight when residents called police to report that two people were screaming and hollering and waking people up in the park.
Drouin and Officer Robert Samson arrived at the scene and, Steward said, observed that Keli White, 24, and James Smith, 19, both of Livermore Falls, had been drinking alcohol.
White is accused of hitting Smith in the face with the butt of a BB gun, which had a wooden stock similar to rifle’s, Steward said.
White was arrested on charges of assault and refusing to submit to arrest, Drouin said.
She was taken to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston by officer Tony Duvall, who had to be called in to respond to the incident, Drouin said
She was later transferred to Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn, he said.
Smith was arrested on a charge of violation of conditions of release and was taken by a NorthStar ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.
Drouin escorted the ambulance to the hospital and stayed with Smith until early Sunday, when officer Ken Bryant took over until 5 p.m., Drouin said.
Smith was threatening harm to himself and was taken to MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta for psychological evaluation, Steward said, noting his department had asked to be notified when he was available for release from the hospital.
Police received a call about 11:30 a.m. Sunday from Smith’s father, who told police his son had left the hospital, Steward said.
Steward said a doctor released the teenager from the hospital and due to medical privacy laws they didn’t notify police.
Smith called a crisis worker, who in return notified police, to say that Smith was threatening suicide and was in the woods somewhere, possibly in the Wayne area, Steward said.
Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department, Maine State Police and Livermore Falls police searched for Smith in their respective areas.
The crisis worker called police again at 6:51 a.m. Monday and reported that Smith had called in and said everything was OK, and he would turn himself in to a hospital, Steward said.
Police finally caught up with Smith after residents of Pine Ridge Trailer Park called them later that day to report that he was there, he said.
Park owners have a trespass warning out against Smith, who is not supposed to be in there, he said.
Livermore Falls police caught up with Smith there and issued him a summons on a charge of the prior violations of conditions of release – drinking alcohol, Drouin said.
