LEWISTON – The cause of a fire that damaged a Webster Street apartment on Wednesday remained unknown a day later.

Fire officials said the blaze started near the stove inside a first-floor apartment occupied by Angelo Giberti and several pets. Fire investigator Pete Morrell said all indications are that the fire was accidental.

The morning blaze at 213 Webster St. was knocked down quickly by arriving firefighters, but the damage left Giberti’s apartment uninhabitable.

Tenants from five other apartments in the building were able to return to their homes later in the day. Giberti will not be able to return until repairs are made to wiring and other parts of his burned apartment, Morrell said.
