LEWISTON – The Hampshire family announces with great sorrow the peaceful death May 31, of John K. Hampshire in Lewiston. He was 92.
He was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England, on June 17, 1914, son of Benjamin H. Hampshire and Louie Kaye. He attended medical school at the Leeds University, England, where he met his future wife, Isabel Hildreth Millington.
He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps (British) in India and China during World War II, and later in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in Canada and Germany.
After practicing medicine in the UK and Canada, he trained in child psychiatry in Michigan. He moved to Maine in 1970, to establish the Children’s Service at Tri-County Mental Health Services.
For him and his wife, Hildreth, Maine became their home professionally, spiritually and personally. They worked extensively in the mental health field, were very involved with Trinity Episcopal Church, and made many good friends.
Some of his recent activities in the community included the Family Practice Residency Program, the Jubilee Center and Faithworks. He also became a mentor for numerous professionals in the medical, social services, and mental health fields. His special interest was in infant mental health. He was awarded a lifetime membership in the Maine Association for Infant Mental Health after attending the state conference for 20 consecutive years. He was thoughtful and active in all social justice questions.
He will be remembered for his enduring sense of humor and devotion to friends, family and children’s advocacy.
He is survived by his sister; six children; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
