Dear Sun Spots and column readers: Are you interested in doing something valuable and fun with your summer?

Why not volunteer at the first ever Camp Middle Jubba? Camp Middle Jubba is a summer camp for Somali Bantu children from grades three to six. It will run weekdays from June 25 to July 27 from 8 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The camp will meet at the Montello Elementary School in Lewiston.

We are looking for enthusiastic high school, college-age volunteers or other passionate folk seeking a fun and learning summer camp experience.

Volunteers may work as much or as little as they choose.

In addition to volunteer positions, we also have some positions that will offer stipends. These would carry more responsibility and require a more steady commitment.

The Somali Bantu Community Mutual Assistance Association has organized the camp with the help of some Bates students supervised by anthropology chair and professor Elizabeth Eames. Many members of the Somali Bantu community will be involved, including the president of the association, Mohamed Farah, community spokesman Sheikh Mohamed and many parents of the campers.

The camp will focus on adjustment to life in Maine especially, school institutions, including homework help as well as playground time. Field trips or excursions to Maine age-appropriate attractions will be held twice or thrice weekly. Each week will have a theme, such as birds, land animals, marine life and such.

Come and learn more about your new neighbors.

Interested?

Please contact Morgan at mbrown3@bates.edu, Sheikh at sheikhdiney@hotmail.com. In addition, you can also contact professor Elizabeth Eames at 784-8317 for more details on this exciting opportunity.

We are looking forward to hearing from potential volunteers. Please contact us as soon as possible so we can begin allocating volunteers to camp groups. – Camp Middle Jubba Staff, Lewiston.

Dear Sun Spots: There has been a change with regard to the 70th reunion of Edward Little High School’s Class of 1937.

Because of Village Inn’s recent fire, it will now be held at Rolandeau’s at 775 Washington St., Auburn. The date and time remain the same: July 7 at noon. If there are questions, please phone Dot Buchanan at 782-7890 or Dot Kern at 783-8238. Thanks. – Dot Buchanan, Auburn.

Dear Sun Spots: I will be moving shortly. I am wondering if there is anyone out there who might be interested in a manual typewriter and long playing records that include classical, 60s, 70s as well as rock. I also have an LP record changer. Readers interested in any of these items can please call Astrid at 524-3191.

Thank you Sun Spots. I find your column very helpful. – A.P., Leeds.

Dear Sun Spots: The Sexual Assault Crisis Center is currently seeking interested women and men who would like to make a difference in the lives of victims of sexual violence.

Volunteers are needed to listen and provide support, information and referrals to hotline callers. SACC will be offering a training for Hotline Advocates soon.

The training provides insight and information in the areas of sexual harassment, sexual abuse, sexual assault and the challenges faced by survivors and their supporters. Volunteers are taught the various options and resources available for survivors of all ages in our community and learn crisis intervention and advocacy skills through training and role-play scenarios with emphasis placed on the importance of self-care.

SACC advocates carry a pager during their hotline shifts, allowing them to be on call from their homes. During a hotline shift, a volunteer may provide telephone support, support and accompaniment through medical exams, advocacy with law enforcement personnel and court accompaniment.

Volunteer advocates must be over the age of 18, empathetic and reliable. No experience is necessary. A new training session is scheduled to begin shortly. To learn more about becoming a SACC advocate, please contact Sarah at the SACC office at 784-5272, ext: 104.
