TORONTO – Javier Vazquez pitched eight shutout innings to win for the first time since April 13, and the Chicago White Sox snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.
Vazquez (3-3) won his first two outings of the season, then went 0-3 over his next seven starts.
He gave Chicago its first victory by a starter in the past eight games. The starters were 0-5 with a 7.17 ERA in the past seven games.
Braves 8, Cubs 5
CHICAGO – The big action at Wrigley Field on Friday was in the Chicago Cubs’ dugout.
Pitcher Carlos Zambrano and catcher Michael Barrett shoved each other and had to be separated in the fifth inning of the Cubs’ 8-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves.
Atlanta had just scored five runs in the top of the fifth to increase their lead to 7-1.
Jeff Francoeur’s two-run double made it 4-1 and, with runners on first and second, Barrett allowed a passed ball and threw wildly to third for an error that let Scott Thorman score.
Pitcher Kyle Davies (3-3) and Kelly Johnson followed with RBI doubles.
D-backs 5, Mets 1
NEW YORK – Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb dominated a makeshift New York lineup Friday night, limiting the Mets to four hits and pitching Arizona to a 5-1 victory.
It was the eighth straight win for the Diamondbacks, their longest winning streak since 2003. Before Friday, Arizona had lost 15 of its last 18 games against the Mets and Webb was 1-6 lifetime against New York.
Dodgers 5, Pirates 4
PITTSBURGH – Russell Martin homered for the third consecutive game and the Los Angeles Dodgers won with their hitting rather than their pitching for a change, overcoming two Pittsburgh leads to beat the Pirates 5-4 on Friday night.
Despite an off night by starter Randy Wolf (7-3), who won his fourth straight although he allowed four runs over five innings, the Dodgers won for the seventh time in nine games. The Pirates lost their fifth in their last six home games and are 10-17 at PNC Park this season.
Giants 13, Phillies 0
PHILADELPHIA – Matt Morris nearly outdid his slugging teammates.
Morris allowed only a single over six innings and had a career-best three hits to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 13-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.
Nationals 4, Padres 3
WASHINGTON – Pinch-hitter Ronnie Belliard singled home Cristian Guzman in the 10th inning to give the Washington Nationals a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night.
Guzman started the decisive rally with his fourth hit, a one-out single off Cla Meredith (2-3). Ryan Zimmerman’s liner to right sent Guzman to third before Belliard sent a bouncer that second baseman Marcus Giles gloved in short right field but could not make a play on.
Indians 12, Tigers 11
CLEVELAND – David Dellucci singled home the winning run with two outs to cap a five-run ninth as the Cleveland Indians rallied past the Detroit Tigers 12-11 Friday night.
Tigers closer Todd Jones (1-3) blew his second straight save opportunity as the reeling Tigers lost for the seventh time in eight games.
and fell 41/2 games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central.
