TORONTO – After more late-inning struggles, changes are on the way for the Chicago White Sox’s bullpen.
Aaron Hill hit a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning and Alex Rios added a three-run homer in the eighth to help the Toronto Blue Jays beat the White Sox 9-3 on Saturday.
Chicago has lost six of its past seven games.
“We don’t have the luxury to lose a game like that,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. “If you lose games like this, you’re going to have a lot of trouble late in the season. We have to do something about it and see what we can come up with.”
Guillen said he would talk to general manager Kenny Williams and said a move would likely come Monday when the White Sox return to Chicago.
“The bullpen is lucky they’re in Toronto,” Guillen said. “If we were in Chicago, I guarantee people would be out.”
Closer Bobby Jenks has converted 14 consecutive save opportunities, but other White Sox relievers have struggled in recent weeks.
Royals 9, Devil Rays 4
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Emil Brown hit a three-run homer and Odalis Perez won for the first time since late April as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 9-4 on Saturday night.
Brown hit his second homer of the season during a four-run fourth that put the Royals ahead 8-1. Kansas City has won eight of its last 10 road games.
Perez (3-5) gave up four runs and eight hits in five-plus innings. He had been winless in six starts – including three losses – since beating Minnesota on April 25.
Tigers 9, Indians 5
CLEVELAND – Ivan Rodriguez and Magglio Ordonez had four hits each to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 9-5 win over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night.
The win was the Tigers’ first in six games against the Indians this season. Detroit had lost six of seven overall going into the game.
Ordonez matched a career high with four hits, including a two-run homer in the third. It was his second four-hit game of the year.
Athletics 1, Twins 0
OAKLAND, Calif. – Joe Blanton and Carlos Silva kept pounding the strike zone inning after inning. Finally in the sixth, Oakland got to Silva.
Blanton pitched a career-best three-hitter, Shannon Stewart broke a scoreless tie with an RBI groundout, and the Athletics snapped the Twins’ season-best five-game winning streak with a 1-0 victory Saturday night.
Blanton (5-3) ended a three-start winless stretch dating to May 11 against Cleveland, which featured back-to-back losses before Saturday’s outing.
He struck out six and didn’t walk a batter in his fifth career complete game and second shutout. Blanton retired 19 of his last 20 batters.
