BOSTON (AP) – The U.S. Coast Guard rescued four people whose canoes capsized in the Merrimack River on Saturday evening, according to a statement.

Rescuers went into action after receiving a report that four boaters were struggling in the current near the Joppa Flats.

One canoe had capsized due to strong winds and both paddlers fell into the water. The second canoe, also containing two people, flipped over as they tried to assist the victims, according to the statement.

A rescue vessel from Coast Guard Station Merrimack River pulled the four people from the water at about 7 p.m. None of the victims was wearing a life jacket.

They all had signs of hypothermia and were taken to EMS standing by at the Coast Guard station, according to the statement.

“We strongly urge all paddlers to wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket and be aware of changing weather conditions when planning to be out on the water,” said Petty Officer Michael Barker, who responded to the call.

The water temperature was about 64 degrees Fahrenheit with winds gusting to 20 miles-per-hour and seas around one foot, the Coast Guard said.
