Dear Sun Spots: Once again I need some help, and you are the first I turn to. The Hooked on Fishing program in Maine is no longer available to us. However, Mrs B’s store in Peru and I are trying to get this going again.
We would like to know if anyone has fishing poles, fly rods, and other fishing equipment that they could donate or let us buy for a reasonable price? We are trying to get a day together in June and August. Thanks for the help. I may be reached via phone at 778-2237 or by e-mail at [email protected]. – Becky Tyler, No Town.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots wonders if you might have checked in with Play It Again Sports here in Auburn, which carries used and new sporting equipment. You may reach them at 250 Center St., Auburn, ME 04210 or phone 777-7427.
In the meantime, many thanks to Emily Jones from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, who was delighted to update Sun Spots and readers on the program which is still very active here in Maine.
Jones notes that the department continues to work with fish and game clubs, teachers, summer camp directors, boy scout and girl scout troops and other civic groups to provide opportunities for Maine’s youth to learn about conservation, aquatic science and angling skills.
The program is available to anyone who wishes to participate and training workshops are scheduled periodically for adults who are interested in becoming certified as a Hooked on Fishing Instructor. Jones writes that there are currently more than 100 certified instructors throughout Maine. To learn more about the program, she recommends you check out www.mefishwildlife.com or phone her directly at 287-8069.
You may also reach her via e-mail at [email protected] for information about the program and in your particular area. In the meantime, happy fishing and thanks to a hot tip from community sports editor Glen Burgess who steered Sun Spots to top fishing times.
You and other hopeful fishermen and women might consider checking out ESPN’s Web site at www.sports.espn.go.com for best fishing times.
