LEWISTON – Police are investigating a spate of home burglaries in which items were stolen by thieves who entered houses and apartments overnight.
Nine burglaries have been reported in the past week. Police said the break-ins occurred at homes on quiet side streets off of high traffic areas.
Since the start of the month, homes have been burglarized on Orchard, Deforge, Main, Pierce and Winter streets and Mountain Avenue. Thieves took cash, credit cards, jewelry and tools in the late night or early morning break-ins, police said.
Suspects gained entry through unlocked doors and windows or by forcing open doors. Most burglaries occurred in the late evening or early morning.
Police stepped up patrols in the targeted areas, including the use of undercover officers in unmarked vehicles, riding on bicycles, and on foot patrols. They are also urging people to be alert for suspicious people, vehicles and activities in their neighborhoods. Residents are urged to call police if they spot suspicious behavior.
“Residents know their neighborhoods better than anyone else. If you see someone, or something unusual or suspicious, call 911,” said Deputy Chief Michael Bussiere.
Anyone with information about the burglaries may contact Detective Trevor Campbell at the Lewiston Police Department at 795-9000, ext. 234
