AUGUSTA (AP) – A Canaan man accused of killing his estranged wife and another woman was arraigned Monday on two counts of murder. Shannon Atwood, 37, pleaded not guilty during a short hearing in Kennebec County Superior Court.

Atwood is charged with killing his wife, Shirley Moon Atwood. Police believe she was killed between March and July of last year, but her body has not been found. He is also charged in the murder of Cheryl Murdoch, who once lived at Atwood’s home.

Her remains were found last August in a wooded area of Canaan not far from Atwood’s house on the Hartland Road.

Atwood is being held without bail in the Somerset County Jail.
