FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Anita Gauvreau McCauley, 90, born and raised in Lewiston, died June 3, in Falls Church, Va., where she had recently moved.
She was born May 24, 1917, the daughter of Dr. Horace L. Gauvreau and Marie-Louise Lebel Gauvreau, both of Lewiston. She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1934, from Bates College in 1938, and received a master’s degree in social work in 1941 from the Boston College School of Social Work.
In 1944, she married then Lt. Vincent Paul McCauley of Boston, Mass., moved to New York, where he was an executive with American Airlines and raised two daughters. She and her husband were married for 53 years until his death in 1997.
During her professional life, she served in numerous administrative capacities for a variety of health and welfare agencies. Among the awards she received during this time were Woman of the Year, Nassau County in 1976, and the Theodore Roosevelt Award for outstanding community service from North Shore University Cornell Medical Center.
She served on the executive boards of the League of Women Voters of Roslyn, N.Y., and the Concerned Citizens of Montauk, Montauk, N.Y. Her interests included jazz, politics, reading, travel, cooking, volunteer work and especially, her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Ellen McCauley Gross of Falls Church, Va.; three grandchildren, Samuel Joseph Gross, William Paul Gross and John David Gross; one great-granddaughter, Ruby Elena Gauvreau Gross; her brother, Dr. Norman Gauvreau of Lewiston; her sister, Claudette Gauvreau Doran of Bluffton, S.C., and Saco; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Her daughter, Sheila, predeceased her in 2004.
