FARMINGTON – Leopold R. “Paul” Couture, 87, a longtime resident of Pineau Street in Jay, died Tuesday, June 5, at his residence, Pinewood Terrace.
He was born in Courcelle, Quebec, Canada, on March 22, 1920, the son of Josephat and Blanche (Bizier) Couture and attended Jay schools. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
On Sept. 24, 1941, he married Irene Berube at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay. She passed away on Sept. 20, 1998. Paul worked for International Paper Co. in Jay from 1935 to 1982 in the repair department and also served as custodian for the old Jay Junior High School for 16 years.
He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church, a member of the IP Quarter Century Club, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Council 320, VFW, Post 3335 of Jay. He was also very active in the Jay Boosters Club, helping to organize and run the Jay Sportsman Shows in the 1950s. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by two sons, Ronald Couture of Jay and Roger Couture, and his wife, Marnie, of North Jay; a daughter, Patricia Benson, and her husband, Peter, of Wilton; a sister, Jeanne d’Arc Tardif of Jay; two brothers, Real Couture, and his wife, Florence, of East Jay and Rene Couture, and his wife, Joyce, of Jay; six grandchildren, Robb and Ryan Couture, Brian and Michael Benson; and Scott and Todd Couture; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Arlene Doiron.
