Here we go again. Sabattus’ town meeting is over and the townspeople have spoken and voted. The school personnel did not listen, as usual, so they passed around a petition to vote again on the school budget.
The vote is set for June 9 at 9 a.m. at Central School, and they will be “loaded for bear.” They have done their homework by mass calling all of their friends and family to vote their way.
They will be there. Will other voters?
There are two schools in town that cost taxpayers $6 million a year. Yes, that is three times the amount it takes to run the entire town. What is all that money used for? Our children are not any better educated than any other town. SAT scores show this. Teachers are very well compensated for teaching in this town, some of them making $55,000 for 180 days of work teaching one subject. How many Sabattus taxpayers make that kind of money in a whole year?
I’ll bet the school board will use the same ruse they have used for years – they will have to do away with sports and extracurricular activities. They know this will get the parents to vote their way. Taxpayers should call the bluff. So far, nobody has dared. Everyone seems scared of educators and their power.
Aren’t taxes high enough?
Phillip Webber Sr., Sabattus
