MECHANIC FALLS – Third-graders from the classes of Carol Pollard and Valerie Emery recently visited the town office to interview the town manager, town clerk and the code enforcement officer.

John Hawley explained the many facets of a town manager’s job and shared a visual handout with the students to show the nine different departments, various committees and the Town Council that are all a part of the town government structure.

Bill Willett, code enforcement officer, explained his job of being a land, water and building inspector. He said he has to follow building codes whenever a resident wants to construct any building.

Lisa Palmer discussed the different parts of her job as a town clerk. Palmer said she has to keep track of all the town’s records and deeds and taxes. She also has to do vehicle registrations.

Each third-grader brought a notebook and pencil to take notes and record details. The information is part of the social studies curriculum, and it helps the school meet the Maine Learning Results portion concerning civics and government at the local level.
