Dog shows

CUMBERLAND – The Penobscot Valley Kennel Club Inc. will hold two American Kennel Club sanctioned dog shows at the Cumberland Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24. Admission fee for spectators is $1 a carload. For more information, call 469-7217.

Camp funding

WOODSTOCK – The Maine Conservation School has received additional money from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife for scholarships to the 2007 summer camp programs.

The funds will be disbursed on a first-come, first-served basis to Maine residents ages 10 to 13 who register for a week-long Conservation Camp or Natural Explorer session.

The camp season runs from June 24 through Aug. 24. Program lengths vary from one to four weeks and there are a variety of programs for all age and experience levels. FMI visit http://www.meconservationschool.org.

Holocaust teaching

AUGUSTA – Two concurrent summer seminars, sponsored by the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine, are scheduled for July 22 to 27 at the Michael Klahr Center, University of Maine at Augusta. The seminars are open to kindergarten to grade 12 educators, guidance counselors and librarians. The cost is $350 for registration and materials. Registration deadline is Friday, June 15.

“Teaching the Holocaust: Implications for the 21st Century” will provide participants with a historical perspective and comprehensive understanding of the Holocaust.

Museum event

BANGOR – The Cole Land Transportation Museum is arranging an opportunity for the public to meet the Maine veterans whose stories are the theme of Don Colson’s book, “Quiet Courage-Stories of the Unselfish Dedication of Maine Veterans.” Many of the Maine veterans whose stories are told will be at the museum on Perry Road from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16, as will Colson.

Grants deadline

AUGUSTA – The Maine Arts Commission is reminding artists that Friday, June 29, is the application deadline for the agency’s four individual artists grant programs. The programs provide $91,000 in grant support for artists.

“The Maine Arts Commission is very proud of its 20-year commitment to supporting Maine artists through direct grants,” said Kathy Ann Shaw, senior development associate and accessibility coordinator with the Maine Arts Commission.

There are four grant programs available to Maine artists, including Good Idea Grants, Individual Artist Fellowships, Traditional Arts Fellowship and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program.
