THETFORD, Vt. (AP) – A White River Junction man has been arrested on several domestic assault charges after he allegedly poured some type of chemical on a woman, critically burning her over 80 percent of her body.
Herbert Rodgers, 52, was being held Sunday by Lebanon, N.H., police on aggravated first degree domestic assault, domestic assault, unlawful restraint and maiming.
Vermont State Police were called to a home in Thetford at 2:45 a.m. Sunday on a report of an ongoing domestic assault. Trooper Hugh O’Donnell arrived to find two teenage girls screaming that they feared a woman in the house was going to be murdered, state police said.
O’Donnell took Rodgers into custody at gunpoint and as he was doing so a woman crawled from a bedroom asking for an ambulance.
She told the trooper acid had been poured over her. Chemical burns already were appearing on her face, torso and legs.
The woman was initially treated at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., and then she was transferred to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She suffered a broken arm, broken eye socket, cuts and chemical burns and was in critical condition.
Investigators believe an industrial strength lye was the chemical used, but they were still trying to determine for certain. The house was declared contaminated by hazardous material, requiring Vermont Emergency Management to help in investigating and cleaning up.
Rodgers was treated for his own contact with the chemical and then taken into custody by Lebanon police. O’Donnell also was screened and released at the hospital. His uniform and boots had to be destroyed because they were contaminated by the chemical.
