NORTH WATERFORD – Ralph R. Pettingill Jr., 86, of North Waterford, died Monday, June 11, at his home in North Waterford, with his loving family by his side.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1920, on Peaks Island, to Ralph R. and Mildred (Herrick) Pettingill. He graduated from Portland High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

In 1946 he began work as an ironworker retiring in 1981. He enjoyed archery, hunting, snowmobiling and woodworking. On Oct. 4, 1937, he married his one and only love, the former Elsie M. Hamlin.

He is survived and sadly missed by his five daughters, Dian Westfall, and husband, James, of Cape Elizabeth, Claudia Swanson, and husband, Richard, Janine Roberts and Deborah Wyman, all of North Waterford and Denise Pettingill of North Attleboro, Mass.; one son, Merrill Pettingill, and wife, Susan, of Saco; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his loving dog and companion, Happy.

He was predeceased by his wife on Jan. 1, 1999; and his sister, Constance Moody on Feb. 1.
