FARMINGTON – Renowned biologist Bernd Heinrich, author of “The Snoring Bird,” will give a reading and sign copies of his memoir at 7 p.m. Friday June 22, at Devaney Doak & Garrett Booksellers.

In “The Snoring Bird” Heinrich takes readers on a multigeneration, cross-continental journey – from his father’s days as a soldier in both World Wars, to his family’s daring escape from the Red Army in 1945 from the secluded hut in the Northern German forest where they lived for five years, to the rustic Maine farm they eventually called home.

Bernd also details the African expedition in which he and his father worked side by side as well as his years as a graduate student, when he found his calling as a biologist. Bernd relates all this in his trademark style, making science accessible while fascinating.

A professor of biology at the University of Vermont, Heinrich also spends time in the forests of western Maine where he has done much of his field research.

Devaney Doak & Garrett Booksellers is at 193 Broadway St. For more details, call 778-3454, or e-mail [email protected].
