LEWISTON – On June 15, 1907, a trolley wire snapped near College and Holland streets, stopping traffic. One hundred years later to the day, it was a dinged gas line that caused similar aggravation at the same location.
A short section of College Street was closed for a time afternoon Thursday after a home repair worker clipped a gas line while digging.
Fire officials said they were called after a smell of natural gas was reported in the area of the damage. After investigating, the Fire Department called in workers from Northern Utilities who began making repairs.
The line was struck at about 2:30 p.m. in the yard at 133 College St. City crews blocked off a section of College between Union and Holland streets until repairs were finished in the early evening.
It was unclear how quickly repairs were made at College and Holland streets when the problem was caused by a trolley line.
“The wire was very much alive and had to be handled with the greatest of care,” according to a Sun Journal news account of the event. “A crew of men soon arrived with the repair car and the break was soon repaired.”
