This is in response to the article about clients of the methadone clinic at Acadia Hospital in Bangor. (June 10) Their behavior was pretty much what I would expect. Granted, many of the recipients of this service can keep their behavior in check, while many cannot or will not.

This makes it difficult for those who are motivated for treatment, and is unacceptable. And I don’t buy the use of drug addiction as an excuse for such behaviors.

Dealing drugs in waiting rooms and outside anywhere is not OK, and only serves to give those clinics a black eye and risk their closure. I believe that such methadone clinics set the stage for threatening and unsafe behaviors. Even though staff may “turn a blind eye” to such actions, those clients need to be confronted and held responsible. If the end result is ousting someone from the program, then so be it.

There are plenty of motivated individuals waiting to take their place.
