Bates College in Lewiston has a beautiful new track on the corner of Russell and Lafayette streets. The college very generously allows the public to use it. That is great, because it is a clean and safe area to walk where one has no need to worry about traffic.

At the entrance to the track is a very large sign stating a few simple rules to follow when using the track, to keep it from getting damaged. That includes keeping dogs off, as well as baby carriages, roller blades, bicycles, skateboards or any other thing that has wheels on it. The sign is written clearly, legibly and respectfully, in large print that is easy to understand.

Why, then, whenever I use the track, do I notice people walking while pushing strollers, pulling children in wagons, using tricycles and letting children skate in sneakers that have wheels on them?

I have seen people walking and running with their dogs, too.

Most of the people using the track are educated, or at least literate. Do they think the rules do not apply to them?

Their children will grow to follow suit, as parents’ actions will certainly influence them. Like Paris Hilton, those children will believe that they are above the rules, or the law.

Not only that, but eventually, Bates College will no longer allow the public to use the track, as some people continue to abuse and disrespect the privilege. It really spoils things for everyone else.
