AUGUSTA – Litchfield’s oldest resident was recognized on the House floor Monday, after receiving the Litchfield Cane, a town tradition.
Louise Mable Briggs Gamage, 94, grew up in Minot and retired from the Blaine House, where she cooked and took care of the children, at age 75. She attended a music school in New York, and still plays the piano.
Her daughter, Mary Lou Gamage, said her mother takes no medications, lives alone and still cares for herself.
Rep. Nancy Smith, D-Monmouth, presented the sentiment.
Campaign advertising split
AUGUSTA – The Legislature is divided over a bill that would prohibit candidates from appearing in advertisements that are paid for directly by state funds.
The Senate approved the measure Friday, and the House rejected it Monday, sending it back to the Senate.
The proposal includes any radio, television or print advertisements, and applies from when the candidate declares until after the election.
The bill would not apply to campaign advertisements paid for by the Maine Clean Election Fund.
