FARMINGTON – Nettie M. Pettengill, 93, of Jay, went to join loved ones who passed on before her, with her loving family by her side, in the early hours of Monday, June 18.
She was born May 12, 1914, in North Jay, a daughter of Jacob and Edna (Townsand) Welch. She received her education in Wilton schools and married Merle Baker in 1932. He predeceased her on June 10, 1979. She later married Raymond Pettengill, who also predeceased her.
In addition to being a devoted homemaker, she worked for 44 years outside of the home at the Wilton Woolen Mill, local shoe shops and Forster Mfg. Co. She was a very genuine, loving and giving person to all who had the pleasure to know her. Those who didn’t, missed a treasure.
She enjoyed camping, fishing, knitting mittens and socks, taking walks to pick May flowers and pussywillows, taking long rides with the hopes of getting lost and finding her way back home, writing, taking time for life’s simple pleasures with friends and family.
She is survived by seven grandchildren, Wandalyn Dorr, and her husband, Gary, of Jay, Randie Smith, and her husband, David, of Stratton and Tammy McGowan, and her companion, John Webster, of Jay, Jolene, Mary Lou, Lisa and Jason Baker; a very special sister, Eleanor Fitch, and her husband, George, of Wilton; 10 great-grandchildren, Gerald Hiscock Jr., Annie, Olan and Merrill Hiscock, Blaine and Matthew Bronish, Robert Sabins, Lisa Knodel and Amanda Sue Kavis, and a very special great-granddaughter, Kimberly Webster; 12 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a loving daughter, Bertha Baker Hiscock; a son, Carl Baker; four grandchildren, Darryl “Kip” Hiscock, Sue Johnson, Gerald Hiscock and Jody Baker; nine siblings, Gladys Quirrion, Cora Farrington, Mildred Hiscock, Jake Welch, Lawris Welch, Ruth Farrington, Glenda Everett, Florence Hiscock and Clifford Welch; and a son-in-law, Gilbert Hiscock.
