Please tell me what is wrong with the Legislature that they would not approve a casino in Oxford County. The state of Maine is desperate for tax revenue, and the people of Maine complain constantly about high taxes, yet no one seems to want an estimated 40 percent increase in tax relief.

Is the hesitancy due to the perception of increased crime, which is not a factor in rural casino environments where many of the patrons are retirees? Is it because the government feels morally that people would spend their hard-earned money when they should not be a babysitter for people’s finances?

The casino would have provided major employment for the people in Maine. This along with a trickle down effect, to providers of services to the casino, would have been a great shot in the arm to the state.

Editor’s Note: While the Legislature did kill a bill to approve a casino in Oxford County, a petition drive to put the question before voters is ongoing.
