PARIS – Kids helping kids.

That’s the way organizers of this Saturday’s yard sale for kids describe the community-wide event that will raise money for children in Kenya who have been devastated by the AIDS epidemic.

“We’re hoping to get word out,” said yard sale coordinator Laurie McKenney of the sale that is open to children ages 5 to 13. “We need donations of toys.”

The yard sale will take place on the high school grounds (in the cafeteria if it rains) from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Children set up their own tables and sell toys. A portion of their sales will be donated to The Gifts for the Kids effort.

In addition to the yard sale there will be a concession stand with popcorn, soda, hot dogs, cookies, lemonade and a Moon bounce and game booths.

McKenney said the event began as a community outreach effort by the Rev. Frank Jewett, pastor of the Oxford Advent Christian Church, who wanted to get other churches in the area to join his effort to raise funds for “The Gift for the Kids,” organization, a locally based charity that raises money for children affected by AIDS. The organization works with charitable agencies such as World Vision and Compassion International. It is raising $20,000 to benefit a child rescue center in Kenya. The money raised through the yard sale will become part of that effort.

McKenney said that the yard sale has blossomed into a non-denominational effort with organizations such as the Rotary Club, Going Postal and the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, which granted free use of the facilities, joining in the effort.

Donations for the yard sale can be brought to the Oxford Advent Christian Church until 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. Contact Loreda Wheeler at 743-6082 to donate toys, or book a table.
