FARMINGTON – The Farmington Recreation Department, the Wading Pool Swim Program and the Sumner P. Mills Swim Program, in affiliation with the American Red Cross, will offer swim lessons. Students are advised that, because of additional criteria in each of the 2005 Red Cross swimming standards of achievement, children who didn’t take swimming lessons in 2005 or 2006 may need to repeat the last level they passed in order to fulfill current requirements.
Classes will be offered, starting June 25, in pre-school “prep” swim for children ages three and four, introduction to water skills, fundamental aquatic skills, and various levels of stroke development, improvement and refinement, and fitness swimming. Farmington Recreation Department will also offer:
• Supervised fishing classes for children ages 7 to 10 on Tuesday, July 3. Cost for residents is $10; non-residents, $12.50. Class will be held from 9 to 10:30 at the Abbott Park Pond. Children should bring a castable fishing rod and reel.
• Golf classes, a new program for children this summer, will teach the the basics of golf, including swing, rules, scoring and course etiquette. The program will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Each session is limited to three golfers. There will be golf clubs available for use.
• Youth self defense classes for children ages 7 to 12 from June 21 to July 26. The class is designed to be an introduction to martial arts for elementary school children. The course will teach the fundamentals of self-protection, self-control and aggression management while emphasizing physical conditions and the sport aspects of the martial arts. Residents, $24; non-residents, $30.
• Junior Olympic development track team for ages six to 15 from June 14 to Aug. 11. Participation in this nationwide program allows youngsters a chance to develop skills and discipline essential to competitive performance in a variety of track and field events. Residents, $20; non-residents, $25.
• Paul Blauvelt baseball program offers youngsters an opportunity to work on and improve their game in the off season. Program runs from July 9 to July 20. Cost is $25 for residents; $20 for non-residents.
• Tennis instruction will be held from June 26 to July 19, then again from July 24 to Aug. 16, for children ages seven to 12. Residents, $20; non-residents, $25. Classes will meet at the Hippach Field tennis courts.
• Pre-season soccer camp for children ages seven to 14 will be held from Aug. 6 to Aug. 9. Residents, $12; non-residents, $16.
