NORWAY – Ernest Clifford, commander of Stone-Smart Post 82 for the 2006-07 American Legion year, asked if anyone in the post would refold a flag given to his niece, Judy Nowak, after the death of her father, Charles Douglas, during World War II.

Ralph Millett, new post commander, and Tom Alling volunteered, and the flag was refolded in the Legion hall following the Norway Memorial Day ceremonies. Douglas was killed while crossing the Rhine River in Germany in 1945.

The folded flag was presented to the family at the time of Douglas’ funeral. The 48-star flag was donated by the United States quartermaster, something they did in those days but no longer do.

Unlike the flags of today that have eyelets sewn into the end, this one had bolt-like rings attached to hang the flag. Following the refolding, the flag was presented to Bernd Nowak, husband of Judy, who was unable to be present because of illness.
