AUBURN – John S. Nevitt of Waterford passed away on June 19, at the Hospice House from complications related to a brain tumor.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 15, 1938, the fifth child of Joseph and Loretta Nevitt. He was raised in Bridgewater, N.J., and moved to Maine in 1969. He was married to Helen Libby and the couple had four daughters.
For many years, he owned John’s Place, a convenience store on the edge of the Bates College campus. While doing business, he especially enjoyed philosophical discussions with both Bates students and faculty and neighborhood customers.
After living in Virginia and Missouri for several years he and his wife returned to Maine in 1999. In recent years, he drove a special education vehicle for SAD 72 in Fryeburg. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his family and was delighted with his two grandchildren. He also enjoyed swimming and gardening.
During his time in Missouri, he survived two bouts of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, including treatment with a stem cell transplant. His most recent illness began in May 2006, when he was diagnosed with craniopharyngioma, a relatively rare brain tumor.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, and their children, Jennifer of San Francisco, Calif., Amy of St. Helen’s, Ore., Rachel, and husband, David, of Burlington, Vt., and Rebecca, and husband, Tony, of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph of Lantana, Fla., Ralph of Bridgewater, N.J., and Richard of Manville, N.J.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
