Old-fashioned crullers – Beat the whites and yolks of six eggs separately. Add to the yolks six tablespoons of sugar, three-fourths of a cupful of melted butter and lard, three tablespoons of milk; and add the whites of the eggs and flour enough to make a paste just stiff enough to be handled when it is very cold. Roll the paste into a thin sheet, cut it into squares, slash each square three times and crush it together and fry in deep hot lard.

That river stench has been raising cain in Lewiston during the heat wave, and the Board of Mayor and Aldermen got firsthand information about what it’s been like from a couple of Mower Avenue residents last night.

John J. Mynahan and Alphonse Gardiner, who live next-door the each other, complained of the smelly situation and asked if the city couldn’t do something about it.

Mynahan said he woke up yesterday morning and “found the paint on our house was almost off.” The “unsanitary condition” of the Androscoggin River is making things “very unhealthy,” he went on.

Gardiner, whose house paint has begun to show the effects of the stench, declared the responsible parties should be liable for the damage, even if it means the paper mills in New Hampshire.

WIMBLEDON – If British bookies know their tennis, it’s going to be a Wimbledon for lefties.

John McEnroe heads for his opening match against fellow American Van Winitsky on the Center Court Monday as an even favorite to retain his title.

Jimmy Connors, also a lefthander, is the second choice at 3 to 1, with nobody else within miles.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Tom Watson won the U.S. Open gold championship for the first time Sunday, scoring a two-stroke victory after destroying Jack Nicklaus’ dream of a record fifth title with a dramatic, chip-in birdie on the 17th hole.
