LEEDS – The “Airing of the Quilts” will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 22 and 23, at the Leeds Community Church, 123 Church Hill Road.

It will feature a display of more than 100 quilts and hangings, many quilt shop and craft vendors, demonstrations, great door prizes, and a silent auction. Lunch will be available at attractive prices.

A $3 per person donation will be requested at the door.

“I can remember my Grandmother Gould teaching me to mend a linen napkin,” recalls Louise Grant of Leeds. “That was just after the Armistace in 1918 and times had been tough during the war. A lot of things were scarce, but Grandmother wanted linen napkins on the table. Using old pieces to do mending was what she called ‘genteel poverty.'”

So began Grant’s lifelong hobby of using scraps to make everything from clothes and quilts to placemats and pot holders.

Since last Christmas it’s the pot holders she has worked on the most. She has made over 400 of them in preparation for her booth at the quilt show.

“I’ve got pot holders for nearly every holiday, and all kinds of animals – including cats, dogs, moose, even frogs – flowers, hats…just about anything you can have,” she said.
