I was saddened to learn that Generations, the only fitness center in the town of Mexico that services both men and women, will be closing July 1. This is the best facility in the greater Rumford/Mexico area, with the most convenient hours and largest selection of equipment to meet my needs. There is no other time that I can work out, and there is no other facility open that early (others work out at this time as well).

Because this closure is related to insufficient funds, the owners of Generations are meeting with the town manager in Mexico to discuss assistance the town could offer to Generations. A plan could then be presented to selectmen.

As a clinical social worker, I have professional training regarding how decisions made by the town influence the community. In my professional opinion, any decision not supporting Generations would be one which hurts our already struggling community.

The relationship between physical fitness and the health of our community has long been established, not only to treat disease but to prevent it. My opinion is that the town should support Generations for the well-being of our community.
