AUGUSTA – A spokesman for Gov. John Baldacci said Friday that the governor would be attending the funeral for a Maine soldier killed in Iraq last week.

Spokesman David Farmer said Baldacci would attend the 2 p.m. services for Sgt. Richard Parker, 26, of Phillips on Tuesday at Mt. Abram High School in Salem Township.

On Thursday, a spokeswoman for Baldacci said the governor would not be able to attend and that Maine Army National Guard Adjutant Gen. Bill Libby would attend the service.

Parker was killed in southern Iraq when a pair of improvised explosive devices detonated near the vehicle he was riding in as a machine gunner.
