LEWISTON – A Vassalboro couple and their two children were injured Friday morning when a farm truck plowed into their car on Route 202.

Police said Henry Williams, 37, was driving his Buick north about 10:40 a.m. when he stopped to make a left turn into a car dealership at 1046 Main St.

Behind him, Martha Graff, 60, of Chesterville did not see his car stop in front of her in time to avoid the collision. Graff’s 2006 Ford slammed into the back of the Buick, crumpling the back and sending it into a ditch, according to a police report.

Henry Williams escaped the accident with a complaint of pain. But in the passenger’s seat, 33-year-old Lisa Williams was seriously injured. She was extricated from the car and taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where she remained in critical condition Friday night.

Graff was not hurt.

In the back seat of the Buick, 4-year-old Ryan Williams escaped with reported pain while 8-year-old Tyler Williams suffered possible broken bones. Tyler was being evaluated at CMMC Friday night. No further information about his condition was available, according to a nursing supervisor.

A man who rushed out of a nearby car dealership seconds after the crash said he tried to open the back doors of the Buick but was unable to. Instead, he spoke with the children in the back seat until rescue crews arrived.

“I didn’t expect any of them to be doing good, especially the kids,” said Bob Coulombe, who owns Down the Road Motors, the dealership Williamses had been driving to. “God was with them, I guess.”

Ryan Williams was pinned in the back seat, Coulombe said. Tyler Williams appeared to have suffered more serious injuries.

“He said, ‘I think I broke my leg,'” Coulombe said. “He kept wanting to know if his mother was dead. It was very sad, but they are strong kids. Both of them are very tough.”

Lisa Williams had become lodged between the dashboard and the driver’s seat, Coulombe said.

“She was lying on the floor in the front seat,” Coulombe said. “She was going in and out of consciousness. She was hurting.”

Fire and rescue crews freed Lisa Williams and the children and brought them to the Lewiston hospital. The crash remained under investigation late Friday night.
