PHILLIPS – A 4-year-old child playing with a lighter set a stack of diapers on fire and ignited a bureau in a two-family apartment on Main Street on Wednesday.

Some quick-thinking tenants were able to knock down the small fire with an extinguisher before it spread to the wall, Franklin County Sheriff Deputy Heidi Gould said.

There were no smoke detectors in the building, Gould said, but they were purchased later Wednesday and inspected by the fire chief.

The 9:30 a.m. fire was in the first-floor apartment. There were several children at home at the time of the fire, Gould said.

The Phillips Fire Department responded to the call, Gould noted. The apartment building is located in area of older homes that are close together.
