DUNEDIN, Fla. – Marguerite “Maggie” Frances Cowperthwaite, 74, of Westbrook, died April 30, at Mease Continuing Care of a brain tumor.
She was born in Kennebunk, June 7, 1932, the daughter of Frances Griffin and Lester Sheehan. She lived in Maine all her life, until the fall of 2006, when she and her husband traveled to Florida to settle for the winter.
A 1950 graduate of Kents Hill School, she later went on to earn her certified nurse’s aide certification at the former Westbrook Junior College.
Along with being a homemaker, she worked for several years in the greater Portland area for Community Health Services as well as Pratt Abbott, and Smiling Hill Farm.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, square dancing, gardening, traveling and playing the piano and organ. An avid animal lover, she always had cats and dogs that were either strays, dropped off, or given to her. Many enjoyed long, happy lives on the farm.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Portland, where she served two terms as a vestry member, a member of the altar guild and sang in the choir. She was a past worthy matron of Rainbow Girls, Readfield.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Merrill G.; two sons, David W. of Norway and Mark S. of Naples; two daughters, Susan Wallace of Harrison and Merry Shaw of Dunedin, Fla.; a half-brother, Frederick Malloy of Rochester, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
