Politics have become too partisan is the cry heard today. The most rank piece of partisanship in the past 100 years was the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. Clinton was impeached by a GOP-controlled House of Representatives for lying about a consensual affair with a consenting adult.
President Richard Nixon would have been impeached and removed from office, but the Democrats in charge of both congressional houses let him know that he would be impeached and removed from office, and he was allowed to resign. President Ronald Reagan should have been impeached and removed from office after funding the Contras after a law was passed expressly forbidding that action.
Presidents take an oath to uphold the laws of the land and to obey the Constitution. Reagan was not impeached because the Democrat-controlled Congress felt that it was not in the best interest of the country.
Now President Bush has ignored the laws of the land and ignored the Constitution. Democrats haven’t even considered impeachment. In fact Democrats have acted in a bipartisan way to fight the “War on Terror” and the invasion of Iraq. Republicans refuse to work in a bipartisan way to do anything.
With Republicans, it is either their way or the highway. They are the bitter partisans who are destroying the Constitution and ignoring the rule of law.
