PARIS – Those claiming damages related to the storm that struck the state in April are running out of time to apply for federal assistance.

Monday is the last day to apply for individual assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Aid is available to residents and business owners who had property damage from storms and flooding that took place between April 15 and 23.

According to a FEMA statement, assistance may include grants for temporary housing and home repair, funds for the replacement of damaged or destroyed property, and loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

On April 23, Oxford County Emergency Management Agency director Scott Parker said only four people had applied for a total of $43,980. As of Monday, 108 individuals have registered for assistance. The amount of money given to individual assistance is projected to be $786,361.

“Most of the claims are driveways, basements, a couple of roofs,” Parker said.

Residents may apply for aid by contacting FEMA and registering, whereupon an inspector from the agency will assess the claim. Parker said some requests have been denied due to inaccurate information or inappropriate claims, but most have been granted.

He said the FEMA line will be open over the weekend, and that the official deadline is at midnight at the end of Monday. According to the FEMA statement, Oxford, Cumberland, Lincoln, Knox, Sagadahoc, and York counties all qualify for aid.
