The lobby against a bill to eliminate public notices from newspapers was fierce. When Terry Hayes realized it was perceived that her bill sought to limit public information, she said it needed more work. It’s been carried over.

As a freshman legislator, she said this session has been a learning experience. She is a member of the State and Local Government Committee, which reviews issues on the organization of government, administrative procedures and statutory issues regarding county and municipal government. She helped review bills regarding the structure of county government and reducing the size of the Legislature. Both issues failed.

The two successful measures Hayes sponsored were both resolves directing state agencies to study options for providing the probate courts with information on pending criminal cases and for authorizing the use of parenting coordinators in Maine. These coordinators help parents going through a divorce decide on child custody.

One of her bills would have extended the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program to guardians of minors who are not related to the minor, providing them with a monthly monetary benefit. The bill died. Hayes said she is still looking for a way to help these families.
