In her guest column July 15, Ruth Taylor hit the nail right on the head, and we should join her in getting our representatives in Augusta to do a better job. Upon reading the comprehensive information about our representatives (July 8), I noticed the majority were in favor of serving longer terms.
I would like to challenge them on that issue. California is a much larger state than Maine, with a greater population and with a smaller legislature, so if our legislators wish to serve longer, let them cut the Legislature to a more reasonable amount and I’m sure the public will let them serve a little bit longer. This in itself will save us a lot of money.
People working for the state should realize that when they were hired they were not promised a job for life. When large industries in the country have to cut expenses, they lay off employees.
The same should be expected in government.
