CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) – A brief look at the first round of the British Open:
Leading: Sergio Garcia, who shot a 6-under 65
Just behind: Paul McGinley, two shots back after a 67. Five other players were another shot back.
Where’s Tiger? Tiger Woods shot a 69, highlighted by a 90-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.
Sergio’s course: Garcia’s round was 24 shots better than the 89 he shot in his first round of the 1999 Open at Carnoustie.
Noteworthy: Woods has won his past seven major championships when breaking 70 in the first round.
Major champs: U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera opened with a 68, while Masters champ Zach Johnson had a 73.
Also noteworthy: Garcia made seven birdies, six more than he made last year in the first two rounds.
