PERU – The trees are being trimmed, the candles lit, cookies baking and Santa is kayaking his way to Worthley Pond for arrival on Friday, July 27. The annual Christmas in July celebration, through Sunday, July 29, has been planned by Chairwoman Sheila Delamater, who, with the help of Santa (Dick Austin), will transform the summer retreat into a Christmas wonderland.

The Worthley Pond Association sponsors the event with the help of area businesses, which have contributed gift certificates as prizes. Winners of first, second, third and honorable mention places in the camp and boat categories will be given gift certificates.

Contestants in the boat category must be positioned in front of the snowshoe club on the west side of the Worthley Pond in the narrows at 9 p.m. Saturday. Judges will award the prizes to the boat contestants and after 9 p.m. the judges will circle the pond to view the decorated camps and award the prizes to the winners.

Delamater said Tim and Judy Worden of Worden’s ERA and Judy Perham and Bob Newell of Perham’s in West Paris will judge the decorating contest.

Everyone is invited to participate. Last year more than 150 camps were decorated and one boat was decorated in a theme that included 2,500 lights. Boaters are asked for safety reasons to circle the pond counter-clockwise and camp owners should be ready for the arrival of the judges at 9 p.m.
