JAY – Selectmen unanimously approved longtime Jay firefighter Rick Duguay as assistant fire rescue chief for station No. 1 in North Jay during Monday’s meeting, Town Manager Ruth Marden said Tuesday.

The board also accepted the resignation of Duguay as emergency management agency director, a job that will be handled by Fire Rescue Chief Scott Shink until a new director is found.

Former Assistant Fire Rescue Chief George Brown died in June.

Selectmen also voted 4-1, with Selectman Warren Bryant opposed, to pave Jewell Street, Claybrook Road and the rest of Davis Road, and to grind, cold mix and chip seal the Jay section of Tessier Road, Marden said.

Highway foreman John Johnson gave an extensive explanation on hot paving versus cold mix, she said. He explained there is a cost savings with a cold mix, but it won’t stand up on a heavily traveled section of road.

There were three people from Tessier Road who want their road done and wanted to know about having the Livermore end of the road done as well, she said. Livermore has no plan to do the road section.

Jay residents petitioned selectmen to have the road done previously.

Tessier, a dead-end road, is off Crash Road and crosses multiple town lines, starting with Livermore, then Jay and ends with a section in Canton.

It is going to cost Jay more than $41,000 to do its section with cold-mixed paving.
