Bath – Everything points to a most successful celebration of the 300th anniversary of American ship building at Bath Aug. 5-9. It promises to be one of the most important events in the history of this famous City of Ships.
• The Lewiston baseball team has thrown in the towel. No more league ball for this city this season at least. The players who have been running things for the past week decided yesterday afternoon that it was useless to attempt to make a go of the team any longer. A patched-up team played Biddeford in the afternoon and was defeated, 12-2.

WASHINGTON – President Eisenhower urged the Senate today to pass the Civil Rights bill quickly – and without a jury trial amendment. A sweeping jury trial amendment which would revise the general law in criminal contempt cases is now being debated by the Senate.

AUGUSTA – Despite the women’s movement, men still hold most of the top-paying state jobs in Maine, statistics show. A recent computer printout listing 638 state workers with salaries above $25,000 a year contained the names of only 49 women.
CASCO – A smokey fire destroyed an electronics manufacturing plant on Route 302 Sunday night, closing the tourist-clogged highway and causing evacuation of the area near the fire.
AUGUSTA – Maine taxpayers may be asked to pick up $112 million in welfare costs in return for having the federal government take over $58 million in Medicaid costs under President Reagan’s plan, according to the Maine Human Services Council.
